Start with the decision you are actually making
China–France FBA mode choice is rarely “which is best forever.” It is which option protects margin and availability for this replenishment cycle. Three levers dominate: cost per chargeable kilo, transit reliability, and stockout risk.
Sea freight: default for volume
Sea freight (FCL or LCL) remains the default for larger France FBA restocks. It usually delivers the lowest unit freight cost when you can plan inventory weeks ahead. Origin density around Ningbo, Shanghai and Shenzhen keeps sailing options broad.
Sea fits sellers who forecast demand and can tolerate longer pipelines.
Train freight: middle ground
Train freight sits between ocean and air on both transit and price for many Europe-bound shipments. It is useful when:
- Ocean ETAs threaten an advertising or seasonal window
- Air rates erase contribution margin on the SKU
- You need a predictable mid-lane without full air spend
On FBAFR, the channel is labelled Train (not “rail”) to match how sellers talk about the product.
Air freight: pay for calendar control
Air freight wins when time is the scarce resource. Typical use cases:
- New ASIN launches
- Viral demand spikes
- Correcting an under-forecast before ads waste spend
Keep air for the fraction of inventory that must arrive first; move the rest by sea or train.
How to compare quotes fairly
Align every quote on the same Incoterm and destination: DDP to the Amazon France FC. Compare chargeable weight rules, delivery windows and what is included for clearance and VAT. Then run numbers in the online quote tool.
Bottom line
- Sea for cost-led volume
- Train for balanced transit
- Air for calendar-critical cargo
Mix modes across a season instead of forcing one answer onto every shipment.
